I would like to emphasize my belief that in solving our problems, the method is just as important as the goal. With this in mind, I believe there are three principals that as a city and as an administration we must strive to uphold;
For a local government that knows what its people need, is informed, honest, and can effectively address the will of the people. Communication extends from the City, Mayor, and Council to the individual, to the Province, CRD, Federal Government, the media, local organizations, and neighbourhoods. Honest and constant communication is the foundation of our democracy.
For a local government that spends tax dollars wisely, investing in infrastructure instead of bureaucracy. Efficiency for our city means reacting quickly to the needs of the people, being proactive in seeking outside support, and ensuring that basic services are provided in a cost-effective way. Efficiency for our Council means that goals are clearly laid out, and all plans, proposals, or decisions reflect those goals at every step of the way.
For a local government that takes into account everything that is set before it, balancing the costs and benefits, realities and intentions to arrive at decisions that will benefit the greatest number of citizens. Balance must exist between our needs and desires, economic and cultural pursuits, industrial and environmental concerns, the routine and the unique; every decision from City Council must reflect this intent. Most of all, in every action of Council there must be a balance between the actions of today and their effects – intended or not – on the future of our city and its region.
"The Issues" will always exist, and as we solve them new ones will inevitably appear. What we need is political will and consistency in addressing new, potential and existing concerns. While on City Council, I will strive to provide a stable, informed, and democratic voice for the people of Victoria.
